Welcome to the University of Texas at Austin Pi Kappa Alpha (Beta Mu chapter) website.

Texas Pikes have entered the summer, and, after a semester disrupted by COVID-19, we are looking forward to the return to our studies in Austin in the fall. Prior to the mid-March transition to on-line UT classes, we had a very active semester with our usual mix of academic, brotherhood, service, and social events. During the “stay at home” orders, Pikes continued to manage their personal academic loads, plan for summer/fall re-openings, and we found time to perform several service projects including delivery of a Bert’s BBQ lunch to the men and women of the UT Austin Police Department in late April. Pikes are extremely grateful to the brave medical professionals and first responders for keeping Austin and our home communities safe in this challenging time. Fortunately, the Pike family has remained safe during the national emergency and we wish everyone good health and safety as the nation continues the battle to conquer Coronavirus.

We are also grateful to the UT Austin administration and staff for creatively continuing our classes, just as we are thankful for the talented architects, contractors and building trades who are working — in a safe and COVID-19-compliant manner — to complete our new fraternity house and learning center by early summer as the centerpiece of Texas Pike’s Centennial Year on The Forty Acres.

On Sunday, March 1st, alumni and the chapter gathered to celebrate Texas Pike’s 100th Founders Day. We enjoyed a BBQ lunch, birthday cake, and tours of the new house construction project. We were honored to have International Pike President Mark Dziatczak and Executive Vice President Justin Buck join us in Austin for the festivities. We are proud of 100 uninterrupted years of brotherhood and service in the UT Austin community.

And it has been very exciting for the chapter to monitor the ongoing construction of the new chapter house at 2400 Leon Street. We’re extremely appreciative of the alumni leadership and donors’ efforts to complete the house in one school year. We’ve seen the new house sprout from the ground, revitalizing the site of the previous house. And we will make many memories with a modern, state of the art fraternity house.

We look forward to joining the Beta Mu alumni and families for an August grand opening and special dedication ceremony to mark Beta Mu Chapter’s 100 years in Austin. Stay tuned for the date to be announced soon.

We are proud of our academic performance as a chapter. Our fall 2019 pledges ranked 6th of 20 fraternity pledge classes with a combined GPA of 3.4, and our actives with a 3.3 average GPA were ranked in a cadre of eight fraternities carding 3.3s. The top overall fraternity boasted a 3.46 GPA, which we hope to overtake next year!

Pike proudly engages in community service projects in Austin and on The 40 Acres. In recent school years, we’ve hosted in concert with sorority co-sponsors, a pancake supper benefiting Austin’s Safe Alliance, and a fundraising pizza dinner benefiting the Austin Fire Department’s foundation and Autism Speaks. Pikes have also volunteered at the Capital Area Food Bank, and for several years running, staffed a Boy Scout corporate skeet shoot fundraiser and we participate in the Texas Interfraternity Council’s Movember men’s cancer research project. In spring 2020 our men helped repaint and perform yard work for a Baptist Church in a distressed Austin neighborhood and as mentioned previously, served lunch to 25 UT Austin police officers in the midst of COVID-19.

The International Pike Fraternity will not hold its usual summer convention in 2020. This past summer our chapter received numerous awards including the Orians Chapter Excellence Award — for the sixth successive year — given to only 20 top-performing national chapters, Pike Scholarship Award, and Pike University awards. Our Alumni Advisory Board was recognized as one of the top 20 national operating boards for the sixth consecutive year. We look forward to a rescheduled national meeting and are confident we will again earn awards and recognition for the chapter.

We look forward to a solid summer 2020 recruitment/rush program and to meeting new UT Austin students interested in being a part of Pike’s 100 years of Austin traditions. We welcome alumni rush referrals and interested students can register for rush on the Rush page of this website. We look forward to a great fall and full school year of fraternity activities focused on brotherhood, academics, athletics, philanthropy, campus participation, and of course a fun social schedule.

In 2020 Beta Mu celebrates her 100th year of continuous operation at the University of Texas. There has never been a time to have more pride in being an active or alumnus of Pi Kappa Alpha. We encourage Pikes, parents, and friends to visit us when in Austin.

Respectfully,

Richard Sherwood ’17
