Enter Lapper, a Sonic Retro user who has been working diligently since 2010 to create a more thorough and consistent level creator based on previous Sonic titles on the Genesis dubbed Sonic Studio (formerly known as Sonic Maker.) We took some time to grill Lapper about his project and what we can expect in the future.

Version 3 is out, it's a complete rewrite in GM1 and ported to GM2.

I didn't add as much stuff in, I was mainly just trying to make sure it doesn't break at this point and wasn't focused on rings or GUI or style.

I might just keep it that simple, since I got my own game to worry about.

Hi, I'm ChrisFurry, and here is a barebones Sonic engine for Gamemaker 2!

I haven't seen very many Sonic engines ported to GM2, so I decided to make one.

This doesn't have very many things, perfect for adding your own!

This engine includes: Animation system, layers, platforms, and rings.

Special thanks to: Sonic Retro, Gamemaker cookbook, Sonic Worlds, Gmate, and SingleShotGamer' (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDTrket7F5Fr4dB0-gprrCA) as they all helped me understand how Sonic engines work.

Install instructions

The zipfile contains the exe, data.win, and yyz file. Gamemaker 2 is needed in order to use this.

btw, i just want to know if V4 will include Super sonic? (btw its working now :D)

if i make v4 ill add the original stuff i put into v2, this is meant to have the very very basics of a sonic game only. Super Sonic you can make on your own, either as a seperate character or a variable.

I suggest making a variable for super sonic.

oh, thats okay, but if its a Drag n drop im gonna be a using tutorials, but if its Gamemaker language, im gonna learn that. just so i can make supersonic lol (because im new to GM2)

1, never use drag and drop lol
it seems easier but trust me it isnt, in GM1 its automatically drag and drop but there are code blocks.

2, it's quite simple to make super sonic actually, you create a variable for it, like for example, literally just 'super', then you make it so any code that damages you doesnt work when super, and make sonic's speed faster when super.

Sorry if my explaining things confuses you, i've never been good at explaining how things work lol.

you forgot something about the .2 that you have to also somehow change the sprites, lol
(and what type of variable? enum? if so, i need to know what folder you make your enums.)

states and animations are in the enum,
for super you would literally just add 'superform = 0' to the create event.

its only meant to really have sonic physics and that's it.

I'm gonna rewrite the engine for version 3.
And make it for GM1 and GM2.

forgot to tell you this but once i opened the .exe file that comes with v2, then I restarted the programm. and it didnt run for some reason

welp.. got no time to talk about it now. or even today, though, have a nice day still

excuse me ChrisFurry, I downloaded the Project hoping I could finally make my own sonic game. I was using the latest version of gamemaker studio 2 trial edition, but when i test the game... The Gui and most of the object/sprites are blank.. It might be because my version is the recent and it needs an older version. if you dont really get it. DM me through itch.io so i can show you a video video about it (if I can) or we can just chat through discord. I will send the Name through DM if we even can so i dont get people through here DM'ing me through discord.

Also try to buy GM2 if you can, I'm pretty sure the trail expires in like only a few days. I understand it costs a lot of money but it's usually worth it.

I'm working on fixing some other bugs that I had when creating my game with the engine too, so then you wont have to deal with them later.

by the way, i know this might sound weird, but i noticed that i did most of the comment wrong. let me edit the whole sentance that started this all.

I have no idea why that's happening, when i opened it, it was completely fine.

The camera and effects object should be blank, as with effects it changes sprites depending on what sprite it's created with.

The camera is just suppose to be blank.

Your version of Gamemaker 2 could be corrupt, or it could be some dumb BS with the trail version, but I dont know. Try and buy the full version of Gamemaker 2 if you can, otherwise I have no idea how to help.

To install Sonic 2 HD:

  1. Click the button above to find the collection of download links.
